Context for the show:
Last June, I was the Artist in Residence at the DRAWinternational Institute in Caylus, France. http://www.draw-international.com
During the one-month residency, I proposed to make large scale drawings that combined art historical and fashion elements with gestural self-expression. I self-funded this residency by selling my art and driving for Lyft and Uber.
Caylus is a tiny village in the rolling green hills of Tarn-et-Garonne, a very agricultural region. Farms and pastures with sheep and cattle predominate. My studio had a wonderful view of the landscape, the medieval tower and chateau of Caylus.
The residency was a fantastic experience and the Caylusians were generous and gracious hosts.
In summary, I didn’t stick to my proposal, which was going to be self-portraits, but I’m very happy with the work I made. My marks became more free and expressive, but I grounded those marks in the tree bark, wire, and rope. This residency allowed me to slow down, focus, and delve into the process of drawing. The Caylus drawings reflect my explorations of texture, the sensation of touch, and the drawing process. The conflict I observed between natural and made-made surfaces provided the catalyst for that exploration.
I would like to thank everyone who purchased my artwork to help me fund my residency. I also thank my husband, Randy, for supporting me in my art endeavors and for tolerating my absence for a month! Finally, I say merci beaucoup to the Alliance Francaise de Denver for generously allowing me to exhibit in this space.
