Penthouse Gal is excited to present a two woman show featuring the work of New York based artists Ginny Huo and Christina Martinelli.
Christina Martinelli (b. 1986) makes meticulously patterned drawings, paintings and sculptures with an energetic and intuitive geometry. The work references the language of textiles while creating an immersive hypnotic experience. Highly detailed patterns are created and layered without the use of a straight edge, allowing the mistakes to construct an unsteady composition. Christina uses subtle humor to invoke resistance to masculine or macho expressions, with an interest in subverting those stances; the rickety lines and bold colors seem to tease the ego associated in the male dominated fields of abstraction and minimalism. Christina has completed residencies at The Wassaic Project, NY and The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, Nebraska and will be an artist in residence at SÍM Reykjavík this June. She received her MFA in Sculpture from The Maryland Institute College of Art, Rinehart School of Sculpture, Baltimore, MD (2010) and her BA in Visual Art from Bennington College, VT (2008). http://www.christinamartinelli.com/
Ginny Huo (b. 1985) creates sculptural drawings and videos with a quick wit to explore social themes. She acknowledges underlying fears found in social interactions and cultural beliefs; in which she finds common routines that bind groups together portraying universal connections. In her most recent work she has focused on deconstructing the shame of being raised in a supremely conservative patriarchal Mormon religion. She discusses the pains of patriarchy and the palpable, hidden wounds it creates in a dark and playful manner. She has been a participant in residencies such as Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (2015), Takt Artist Residency in Berlin (2015), Visiting Artist and Scholars at the American Academy in Rome (2014), 33OC Creativa (2014), and SOHO20 Gallery in New York (2012). She received her MFA in Sculpture from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2011 and her BFA from Brigham Young University in 2008.
This show was organized by Jen Coster; who is an interdisciplinary artist, resident at Penthouse Gallery and runs the press Munu Editions. Screenprint editions were created with each artist for the show.
Penthouse Gallery is located in the CopyCat Building on the 5th fl B side. The opening takes place during the First Friday Station North Alloverstreet walk, and can be viewed by appointment through May 19th.
