For the first time, the exhibition “Y” at Galerie In Situ brings together all the works of the “Crotches” series; In progress for sixteen years and composed of forty-eight oils on canvases (81 x 65 cm).
In her “Crotches”, Lisa Salamandra declines symbolically and metaphorically the “Y” of the feminine crotch. This region, which is so connoted, charged, and sexualized, becomes under the auspices of its “Y’s”: a leaf, a triangle, a labyrinth, a sky dividing two patches of forest. Its unveiling of the female body evokes themes as varied as protection, confinement, pleasure, mystery, fertility … This series speaks of woman as a ship, leaf, patriot: the “Y” as an emblem.
As Abnousse Shalmani writes in his text on the series: “The crotch of women is no longer reduced to desire or maternity; it no longer oscillates between the licit and the illicit; The more the prison of women, the origin of his servility or his fault. It is all political, organic, sexual, dreamlike, vegetable, dark, joyful, animal, steel or dream, it is what the woman chooses to the liking of the days. ”
On the occasion of this first exhibition of all these works, a catalog was published; It will be visible and available at the gallery, at the vernissage and during the duration of the exhibition, and on order. This publication is prefaced by renowned writers Abnousse Shalmani, Ilene Dube, and Mary Oestereicher Hamill.
